One of my favourite bands is Divorce. They produce a really fun newsletter which the different members take turns to write and they have all included a link to songs they are currently listening to and which have inspired their song writing. They are all an eclectic mix of old and new. I think maybe this one from Kasper has the most contemporary artists on it.
Asking bands directly what music they like is a fucking brilliant idea! I am so excited about listening to all of this!!! I mean, it starts with Sprints... Hooked from the start!
You ain't kiddin' about January. I've actually sat on releases to push them into late Feb.- early March, to avoid them sinking without a ripple had they been released anywhere between New Year's and Valentine's Day.
Everyone does their "Year-End" lists and doesn't want to look at a damn thing for weeks after. Same with the PR folks, staffs go sunning and the bosses go skiing. Only the bands are hard at work, writing and trying to book.
Honestly anything after mid-October is even worse, I'd say... if it's released any later it's pretty much dead in the water as far as EOY lists go. It's actually a complete joke. I'm not an industry insider by any stretch of the imagination but I really want to write an article about why the annual album-ranking exercise we all buy into is complete crap.
I've seen people jumping in as late as mid-November land spots in EOY lists, bc "recency bias" + a quality record go pretty far. Unfortunately, as much of a fundament-thorn as EOY lists are, sometimes they're the last chance for outside PR your record may get; unless you or (if lucky) your label has a "wrap-up" campaign brewing.
As usual, it feels like trying to unlock a door on a moving carousel by throwing a key at a scalpel-thin keyhole from 20' away.
My mag waits until December but we aren't "real" and nobody knows we exist. The upside is we (theoretically) aren't influenced by anyone. In reality our lists end up looking pretty similar to everyone else's, though.
This is awesome. Great lists. My recommendation to you is “You Should Not be Doing That” by Amyl and the Sniffers. Some of the stuff coming out of Australia is incredible.
This rules. Can’t wait to see Sprints live in a couple weeks.
same!! I'm really excited

I love when bands do newsletters. I'll definitely check it out

P.S. there's a local band I love called FEASTS and they do a FEASTS weekly playlist with all their favourite tracks (that they add to each week). I've found some amazing finds on there! https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0LEUu9IWmLznWLE2zVAJHC?si=lUBGLaLCRLaWIx_EIomB5A
thanks for the rec
I don't think I'll normally have the stones but in this case I figured I would give it a shot
Cool post! I also like this playlist by Nate Amos of Water From Your Eyes, which is a fun way to get a window on his creative process. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1EW2G8Mwo26C9oEAhkFyO4?si=eScMdqUgTvKt-VlOMkNTcQ&pi=u-l70_NjwYSPyv
man that band was one of my favorite discoveries of last year. I saw them earlier this summer and it was super fun
There'll never be a shortage of new sounds. I had never heard of sprints so thank you, again. Raw and inviting, edgy poetic...love it
I will devour all of these playlists - thank you!
Thanks for the shout-out - and the recommendations. "A DJ set fit for a dark French disco" has definitely piqued my interest!
I mean anyone who isn't intrigued must simply not enjoy fun

Love that you are getting up and coming bands to list their favorite up and coming bands. I love Slow Fiction from SPRINTS favs.
Yes. Lambrini Girls and King Hannah on the SPRINTS playlist. LG are really addictive!!
they are!!
What a great idea! 💡 so much to absorb here. I have a lot of listening to do!
time to go exploring!
What a time to be alive when we can receive mixtapes made by our favorite artists.
we are truly blessed
Haven’t been sold so quickly on a band as “Ticking” in a minute damn

First song on the SPRINTS album.
oh I thought you were saying it's a new band lol
Really digging Sprints! Any band that opens for IDLES is right up my alley. Have I mentioned how much I love IDLES? I do. I love IDLES.
who doesn't love IDLES? dummies, that's who
I couldn’t agree more.
Thanks for the recommendations! Are any of the artist playlists on Apple Music?

I love Amyl & the Sniffers! I'm working on a whole Australian bands playlist, because they are killing the game right now
Agreed. Looking forward to that post (that will include Tropical Fuck Storm, right?).
