It's back: the playlist you help create, full of the smallest, most underrated artists that you want the rest of the world to love as much as you do. Plus - the first record giveaway of 2025!
Thanks for keeping this running while also taking care of your priorities! Whatever it takes to have you creating and curating is the schedule that works for us.
Been working on a playlist the past year of almost all small unknown bands that fit my musical tastes. Its called zen groove, theres no more than 2 songs from any artist and its currently ten hours. Check it out if you are interested, lots of good stuff in there.
I want to put forward a local artist in my town, Hobart, Tasmania. Q.E. is the band of Jacky Collyer, a wonderful songwriter, singer, producer, and general awesome human.
They just put out a track called "To Tasmania", and the intro sounds like a moment from a magical Ghibli film. A prior track "NST" has more atmospheric production stuff, a bit more spacious with some really tasty textures.
The dark & delicious, atmospheric yet somehow simple vibe is right up my alley.
An artist I'd put on a similar playlist is Moreton, another Australian band headed by a wonderful woman, though a bit bigger on the scene (they had James Vincent McMorrow feature on a track).
Moreton has 14k monthly listeners, and Q.E. has 214, but I'd definitely say they are just as good as each other. So wonderful. Q.E. are also amazing live, a great set of instrumentalists.
This is interesting. I used to compile a weekly playlist and listening notes. I found it took so much time - fun to do, many new musical discoveries for me, but so little time left for the actual writing I came here to do, and want to get as good as I possible can at doing.
I needed to take a break from writing. I’m back but the playlist isn’t. I’m thinking a sort of organic playlist - a couple of tracks added each week, and then giving it an edit and proper sequencing at the end of the year.
It’s reassuring to know I’m not alone in needing to rethink a little!
Ohhh just stumbled on you. Love this. I have also been putting play lists together since lockdown of what music crosses my path. Something very healing about it. Thank you for sharing your music!!!
I've started using Yet Another Music service. Qobuz's claim to fame is high-quality audio. Can't really attest to that, but I hear they also have the highest artist payout, even more than Tidal. I imported this playlist, and it had all but 2 of the songs. It's missing "Home Is" by Caved Mountains and "Runner" by KAPUT (I did add "High Wire"). If you're interested, here's the playlist:
Thank you very much..will definitely be checking these out.
I'd like to nominate a few:
Tarta Relena - two girls out of Portugal, I believe, who compose music made mainly from voices. It's a bit like Bjorn's Medulla album.
Khanate - not for the faint hearted. A guy who sounds like he is screaming from the hellish depths of his soul enunciates lyrics over metal guitar licks. Difficult but incredibly compelling. "It Wants To Fly" is a highlight - fully makes you feel like a psycho is showing you your organs one by one as you are dying.
Carla Wehbe - rising voice in pop music for sure. "Life's an awful mess" just puts me in a happy place.
Having connectivity challenges with streaming everything, so I will have to circle back. I am still high on Curtis McMurtry’s The Pollen and the Rot, and especially Last In Line, about the billionaire class. Timely Stuff!
And since it wasn't clear, I think, in this post... the music should be NEW. This is NEW bands for old heads ;)
Last 5 years or so?

thanks so much for this -- it's been a little rough going over here with the work/life balance, so i genuinely appreciate it!

Great playlist Gabbie! Thank you for sharing!!
Recommending Nick Chiodras for the next one - Braced and Caged are both really nice, but he’s got a good variety that’s fun to listen to across the board. Some moody, some ambient. https://open.spotify.com/artist/5TDB9CkgQvAvYmsKQzRRkl?si=4_TFFh4iSv-NCH5DcGqMCg
