The new music recommendation formula returns with a look back at a decade that brought us more than just Beatlemania and Folk revival. Tune in for modern Motown, martini lounge, Yé-yé, and more.
Wow, some real excellence here! A bunch of new artists for me and I loved what I heard from Shannon and the Clams, Courettes and Pete Josef. I’ve long been a fan of Thee Sacred Souls but didn’t know they had a new album so thanks for putting it on my radar!
If you haven’t heard it I’d highly recommend the 2021 compilation Penrose Records Vol. 1. It’s the first time I ever heard of Thee Sacred Souls and the entire compilation shares the same dna. Also Curtis Harding and The Monophonics very much capture that Motown vibe for me.
●Love the Motown suggestions. I'll add that Durand Jones and the Indications (Aaron Frazer's in the Indications) is another good one. Also try Jalen Ngonda - he's got an early Curtis Mayfield vibe.
● I can't seem to get into Shannon & The Clams. For whatever reason, I always want them to sound more like The Detroit Cobras, who I love wholly and completely. Another girl group rec (its old, 2006) The Pippettes! Also Wish Wash's self titled is girl groupy/a little punky. Kind of like That Dog.
● I love 60s stuff so much. Great concept with this one.
I actually just today became aware of this band called Being Dead, that seem to have a massively 60s vibe, especially this song called Godzilla Rises:)
Definitely rate Shannon and The Clams. I think I might have tabbed the Year Of The Spider as one of my albums of the year when it came out but totally missed one this year. Will have to give it a spin!:)
I would throw in Kit Sebastian - not really definable, but there is a big Ye-Ye aspect to their sound and presentation, combined with a lot of Anatolian / Turkish influence. The French guitar player may be tallest person in rock, and there is one track that is directly influenced by Jaqueline Taeib.
Ghost Funk Orchestra are another that sit between - as funky as the soundtrack to Luke Cage, but sometimes as space age as Broadcast
I saw them and Juniore in last few weeks (after waiting live to see either) - both great live. My wife has bagged a ticket for Shannon and The Clams in a couple of weeks too. Having sat through enough repro bands in my time, it’s a good era for young bands doing something new with those influences.
I have to agree that the best was last. That Juniore track is a ripper. And enough to get me searching the rest of their ultra groovy catalogue - a perfect accompaniment to a cruisy Friday here. tres chic, extraordinaire
I’m fairly new around here, but I loved this format (maybe also helped by the fact I seem to like the genres with a bad rep?) I had heard of literally zero of these bands, so super excited!
ugh I'm annoyed my response earlier didn't post, but it's something to the effect of -- I think that bad reputation may have been extreme, but I do think these are often seen as guilty pleasure genres
A self indulgent past time of mine is seeing what Spotify serves me after my bands songs. Kind of like googling yourself 😁. Anyway, yesterday it was Chinese American Bear! Love it. Your recs are infiltrating my algo!
Couldn’t get the KCIDY clip to play for some reason. But damn, I’m loving this entire collection. Joseph and Sault are standouts for me. I discovered Los Bitchos somewhere along the way this year (In substack most likely). Digging their vibes, too. Restacking!!
absolutely love the mystery lights, and they are on that classic rock playlist I referenced in my intro! more of the vibe I was steering sliiightly away from in this post but such a fantastic find. nice shout.
I saw The Surfrajettes open for Rev Horton Heat in Toronto this summer and I was in love 🥰

The Surfrajettes rule.
Also: Ye Ye might be one of the most underrated genres out there!
Try Jalen Nagonda is you like classic soul
This makes me happy. Thank you.
I'm so glad!
A few things...
●First of all, great post.
●Love the Motown suggestions. I'll add that Durand Jones and the Indications (Aaron Frazer's in the Indications) is another good one. Also try Jalen Ngonda - he's got an early Curtis Mayfield vibe.

Absolutely love Durand Jones, and should have mentioned that factoid here!

Being Dead is great, though a slightly different vibe! I've been enjoying them

Great suggestions to Gabbie’s list. Was listening to GFO last night. So good.
Kit Sebastian was in my shortlist for the Yé-yé section! They are on the playlist (in a future post)

it's just an incredible album. stay tuned for a treat in the next post.

oh my goodness!
Did you write this post exclusively for me? It feels like you did. So many acts on there I love and so many I’m excited to go and listen to!
Same love a lot of the bands that Gabbie mentioned - I think Shannon & the Clams is my new fave band. Soooooo good <3
this really is a Joe-coded post, isn't it??
Extremely. I approve

sorry, it works fine on this end! she's easy to find though
Glitches!
Nice parallels and choices! 👏 I’d add: if you like garage rock a la The Sonics and The Weeds (and maybe The Seeds), check out The Mystery Lights
