Today, I'm taking a shortcut with a simple new music recommendation formula. Featuring new band recs based on Radiohead, Pavement, New Order, Lauryn Hill and more.
Clicked on your Adrianne Lenker recommendation and two albums in I was like… why do I feel like I know her? Well , I looked her up and was like OH maybe because I have all of the Big Thief albums saved and loved haha . Loved this format. I used to spend hours a week looking for new music and fell out of the habit when I got married and moved away from friends with the same interest (my husband does not like to listen to music… crazy but I love him tho). You’ve inspired me to take it back up! I live in Nashville so I have no excuse
Hello, I've seen Egyptian Blue live this year (one of the few interesting bands that came to my little french town), they were quite good but so dead serious and without any interaction with the crowd it was strange. Anyway I think they were rawer and much better live than on record, although all songs sounded quite the same.
Also new here. I'm an old head who knows lots of people stuck in the 70s, let alone 90s. I am not one of them. I have discovered lots of great music on my own via Bandcamp and other streaming services as well as friends and publications. Yes, occasionally via an algorithm too, but I much prefer the human strain. I was glad to see one of my algorithmic discoveries mentioned here, Blondshell. Listening to and loving your recommendation of Operators as I write. Also hear a little Heaven 17 in their sound. Seeing the comment about Roxy music reminds me of one of my own if you like X recommendations. If you like King Crimson you might like Isildurs Bane, Anglagard or Anekdoten. Prog is the genre I'm most plugged into, but I love everything from The Monkees and Beatles, Fat Mattress, Steely Dan, Kevin Gilbert, The Anchoress, Arooj Aftab, Jeff Parker, Alison Krauss and all things Steven Wilson to name just a few. Looking forward to some "discourse" and great recommendations for new music of all kinds. (I recently joined a Balinese Gamelan outfit and am enjoying learning to play some things for the first time. Best, Vince
A new artist I've heard and really like has won some PROG magazine awards in recent years. Try "The Art of Losing" by The Anchoress (Catherine Anne Davies).
Loved seeing Bully and Andy Shauf on this list! Just saw Shauf live. He’s been a top rec of mine for almost 6 years now. Bully is so fun in concert and a huge inspiration for solo writers
big fan of this here brain dump style! especially happy to discover bully, cola, and operators! i was just talking about handsome furs yesterday. at a point, it felt like he had so many bands and side bands it was hard to keep track
I knew (and am a fan of) most of your recommendations already, and was especially excited to see Egyptian Blue here as they were a great discovery from Matt Bull earlier this summer. Been playing the heck out of them.
Will need to check out more of Stuck and Folly Group. Also Working Men’s Club and Cola I must check out when I get a spare hour.
Haha! Iwill send you a list of the 5000 artists and bands in my collection so you can know who to exclude. No, it made me feel like I’m cool again. It was a good balance of what I knew and what was new to me. Your regular lists are almost all new to me, so you are adequately esoteric.

Great recommendations! DM Stith is another good Elliott Smith dupe. His last album, ‘Fata Morgana,’ still haunts me.

aww that's too bad. I wonder if they are still getting their bearings performing in front of crowds?
These are great recommendations, thank you!
you're very welcome

prog is one of my music gaps (comparatively) so I'm always looking for recommendations in that space! thank you
I’m always happy to recommend Prog; old, new and new to you. If you list a couple of your favs maybe I can turn you onto something you haven’t heard.

shauf shouldn't be "for me" given my tastes but I do really enjoy him
New here. I'm looking for Roxy Music, Eno and post Eno

Hell yeah, Softcult and Cloakroom are my exact jam. They'll compliment my current obsession (Babe Haven) real well.

some people are just wildly talented! I'll keep this brain dump trick under my hat
Cola and Working Mens Club are both ace 🖤

there's nothing new under the sun! I need to work a little harder and get more esoteric with the recommendations

Love this! Excited to listen!
How about XTC, Squeeze, or The Housemartins?
Definitely recommending Alex G for any Elliot Smith heads out there who aren’t already across it
He also gets recommended as a Pavement soundalike often
Excellent pairings!!
ymmv, but I really heard some Radiohead-like sounds listening to this band: https://music.apple.com/ca/album/everybody-knows/1715319894
(and thanks for the Jockstrap rec! they sound very intriguing...)
thanks for the rec!
