New Bands for Old Heads started out life as a TikTok series and has finally made its way into the multimedia newsletter format where it belongs. Here, I recommend new music that sounds like the bands you loved in the ‘90s and early 2000s (or earlier!).

This is a place for people who want to get into new music, but feel overwhelmed by it, or maybe even think it hasn't been good since [insert whatever decade it was that you were in your 20s]. Basically, I’m trying to get you excited about music discovery again.

I do that through playlists, videos, reviews, artist features, community discussions, and all kinds of other stuff still in the works. I also yap a lot about irrelevant, unrelated topics, so get ready for that, too.

When does it happen?

NBfOH is published approximately weekly, approximately Mondays, but there won't be a standard newsletter format — there's just too many things to talk about.

Having said that, I do have some regular playlists I’ve already rolled out, so you can expect a little bit of stability around these time frames:

  • 2nd week of the month: Known Unknowns (a playlist you help build, feat. your favorite bands nobody else has heard of)

  • 4th week of the month: Song Overflow (for paid subscribers only: my monthly “first impressions” playlist before I sort into public playlists)

Why pay for it?

You don’t have to! A lot of content here is free. But if you do, you’ll get more playlists, more recommendations, and more chat access.

You’ll also be supporting my work, and that helps me distribute all of my playlists (currently on Spotify, Apple, and YouTube) onto other streaming services. Accessibility is the key to music discovery, my friends!

And if you’re still not convinced, take it from Michael:

Since I started reading your content/ engaging with your community, I’ve:

  • Gone to a record store and talked to a guy that I admire and respect about new music

  • Listened to community radio again

  • Explored your playlists and YouTube videos of bands on your playlist talking about bands they admire

  • Talked with my tattoo guy about bands extensively and worked through a series of bands that we share in common and took recommendations from him

Thanks, Gabbie!

If you want those things but can't afford them right now, just send me a message and I'll get you sorted out.

Anything else?

Sure! You’ll get sick of me saying this, but I think the best thing about discovering new music, as well as the best way to discover new music, is the community around it. That means I want to hear from you.

If you’re a musician…

E-mail me at meandtimory@gmail.com if you want me to listen to your music. If it’s my thing, I might add it to one of my playlists, I might end up writing about it, I might put it in a TikTok, who knows! If it’s not my thing, don’t worry; I don’t roast anyone here. Well, not artists, anyway. Also, please do not be upset if I don’t respond right away. I promise I’m getting to it!

If you’re a writer…

I’m always looking to collaborate! Please reach out with ideas.

If you’re anyone else…

I try to keep an active chat going. I learn about a ton of music from you guys, new and old. Please stop by and say hi.
