Song Overflow #3 - September 2024
Scouring new releases is a messy process. I'm letting you inside the weigh station where all the songs I find hang out before they get sorted into "real" playlists.

Welcome back to (a slightly belated) Song Overflow, a monthly playlist that lets you peek inside the chaos of my music discovery process.
Like a disorganized audio Pinterest board, the Song Overflow is where I tuck all the “definitely later”s that pique my interest but don’t immediately lend themselves to categorization into an existing playlist.
Think of this as a pile of good first impressions that I’m letting you sift through before everything makes its way into its rightful spot.
I always pull out a few of my favorite tracks for your perusal and appraisal first. Normally these are also behind a paywall, but from now on I’ll only be paywalling the playlist itself.
Enjoy!
1. The Bug Club - Better Than Good
Tongue-in-cheek nerd rock that sometimes verges on self-parody. The fun is so infectious that it hardly matters.
Sounds kinda like: A mix of The Velvet Underground and Moldy Peaches. I hear “Temptation Inside Your Heart” all over this track.
[Spotify]
2. SASAMI - Slugger
SASAMI is leaving behind nu-nu-metal and entering her “Murder on the Dancefloor” era. A perfectly crafted pop song.
Sounds kinda like: Robyn
[Spotify]
3. Bad Moves - Let the Rats Inherit the Earth
Do you need a new power-pop anthem to blast out of your car windows? Are you (somehow, inexplicably) tired of playing “Flagpole Sitta” over and over on a loop to pump yourself up? Today’s your lucky day.
Sounds kinda like: The New Pornographers
[Spotify]
4. Mint Field - Un Flor Sin Interior
Mexican shoegaze/dream-pop with heavy ‘90s influence — gorgeous, ethereal, and haunting. Perfect for all the fall playlists we’ve been throwing around lately.
Sounds kinda like: Smashing Pumpkins fuzz with Cocteau Twins vocals
[Spotify]
5. The WAEVE - City Lights
Glam rock is back, so let’s dance, baby. Just ignore the fact Graham Coxon can’t carry a tune — it’s part of the charm, right?
Sounds kinda like: David Bowie
[Spotify]

P.S. Go back and see what you missed in previous editions. I removed the paywall from the playlist previews on these posts, too.
For those who aren’t ready to become paid subscribers, I have many public playlists available on Spotify, Apple, YouTube, Amazon and Tidal.
I’ll be stoked if you consider it, though! It’s the reason I’m able to offer playlists on so many platforms.
